RECOVERIST = recovery + activist
I recently visited The Whitworth in Manchester. They had a wonderful exhibition that really resonated with me called "Recovery Curators". Though focusing on recovery from substance abuse, for me the artwork translates further to include recovery from any trauma and struggles. The capricious journey of recovery, of accepting oneself and the trauma we work through.
The inspiring diversity of this exhibition of Recoverist Curators shares the journey of an array of artists
Am I a Recoverist?
For me, it is my journey with epilepsy that is at the core of much of my art. It is the impact that epilepsy has on my life as well as the global lack of awareness around the condition.
The beauty of creating is that it allows us a space to both process and share our unique story; to visualise our perspective on life. Art both encourages conversations around the concept that we, as artists, associate with the art and allows others to find their own meaning.
It's a wonderful thing.
From The Whitworth
"Recovery is often misunderstood. Recovery is not finite; it is a social process, a journey. It is cultural, contemporary and in the moment. Through the lens of recovery, the curators have researched and reinterpreted the Whitworth’s collection. By curating this exhibition of artworks and engaging the public, the Recoverist Curators share their aspirational stories of hope, fear, desires and dreams."
